DUNLAVEY John C. (Jack) Age 73 of Elmira, NY, died Thursday May 15,  2003 at St. Joseph's Hospital. Jack was born in Elmira, the son of John  E. and Catherine Casey Dunlavey. His beloved wife of 51 years, Arada,  and son, Jimmy, predeceased him. Jack is survived by his children, with  their families, Cathy Dunlavey of Buffalo, NY; Colleen and James  Muldowney of Chicago, IL, with sons Andrew and Jake; Corinne and Steven  Ozl of Manassas, VA, with children, Sarah, Rebecca, Jessica and Steven;  Jack and Judy Dunlavey of Elmira, NY, with children, Katie, Tim, Casey,  Elizabeth, Brennan and Benjamin; Cary and Dan Sullivan of Elmira, NY,  with children Ryan, Padraig and Lauren; Joseph Dunlavey of Elmira, NY;  Jerry Dunlavey of Chicago, IL; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Dunlavey with  children, Kyle, Kristopher, Sean, Peter and Molly. Also surviving, are  brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Margaret Dunlavey; sister and  brother-in-law C. Loretta and Harry McCarty of Horseheads, NY; along  with his cousins, Julia Clare Richards, S.S.J. and Theresa Sullivan,  and several nieces, nephews and many good friends. Jack was also  predeceased by his sister, Mary Nelan. Jack was a decorated US Navy  veteran, serving as a medic in Korea. He was awarded the Bronze Star  for his heroism during the Battle of Hoengson, Korea in November of  1950, after displaying,"great skill, courage and confidence in  performing his duties". He was wounded saving twelve men under heavy  fire, and awarded the Purple Heart as well. Following his military  career, Jack earned his CIC Insurance Certification and entered into  the insurance business. He retired as a partner of MacNamara and  Carroll Insurance Company. He was a longtime Rotarian, with a special  interest in serving the needs of Camp Star. Due to his outstanding  community service as a Rotarian he was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow.  Jack was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the  Catholic War Vets. Jack and Arada took the most pride in their children  and grandchildren, supporting them through their presence at every  activity. These events took them from Elmira to Niagara, Hobart,  Buffalo, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Virginia. He was actively involved in  Notre Dame High School Sports, where he operated the time clock for  basketball games for twenty-five years, before going to the Eastern  College Athletic Conference to operate the clock for football games.  Jack was one of the original Golf Channel Volunteers for both the BC  Open as well as the Corning Classic. Friends are invited to McInerny  Funeral Home, corner of Water and Walnut Sts., on Tuesday, May 20, 2003  from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. A prayer service  will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at 10:15  A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. at Our Lady  of Lourdes Church. Interment, with military honors, will follow in  Woodlawn National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack's  memory may be directed to Notre Dame High School, 1400 Maple Avenue,  Elmira, NY 14904, or the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, 1316  College Avenue, Elmira, NY 14901. Jack's family would like to extend  their thanks and sincere appreciation to the Rehab staff on C-4 for the  outstanding care given to him during his time at St. Joseph's Hospital.  Officers and members of the Catholic War Vets Post 1178 will meet at  McInerny Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 20th at 5:40 P.M. to conduct a  service for our departed comrade, Jack Dunlavey.
